Man it was so warm on Saturday, temps up to the mid 60s. No wind and the wrong tide and venue (Tower), but no complaints at all.

Its been a while since we SUP’d the ocean w/o gloves in January, heck we were topless in the parking lot.

JR was dialing in his new RRD rig that Santa gave him for Christmas.

For Dimitrios, it was his first time in the ocean on a board of any sort. Great Job D.

New Year At Tower Road

Not what ken and I had hoped for, but any day of sailing is a GREAT day of sailing.

Took a few runs with the quad 75 and Loft 4.7 Lip wave

but it was very holy so i switched to the 90 Twin and that just right

Ken was in good form

getting nice air, and tossing forwards,

but one attempt turned out bad ;)

but a quick and dirty beach repair and he was back at it

how bout that form eh? fully layed out

Ken and I sup sailed Assateague on New Years Day. Mostly less that we'd hoped for, until very late in the day when the wind actually filled in enough to get a couple runs on the 101 and 5.3.

The sunsets however...never disappoint on Azz

Sailed for about 30 minutes tuesday. The thing about December has been that each wind event has hit Delmarva during the night. There have been plenty of Gale warnings, its just that we were all alseep when they hit. So I'd been skunked so far this December

..so despite a drving rain, we drove down to Dewey around 3.30

and i rigged and hit the water around 4.10pm

sunset was around 5pm. Over powered 5.3 on the RRD 90 wave twin

I used to wear Neil Pryde dry suits, but they don’t hold up to NORMAL wear and tear. Very disapointing. The material is very fragile, and I often would breach the material with a careless gouge of my finger nail. I went thru two of these suits in 3 years, and they never did live up the “Dry” billing, at least not the way I sailed in them ;) . Sent them away twice for repair, once for a new zipper, and once to patch assorted tears.

No question in my mind the most technologically advanced suit on the market is the Mystic Force Drysuit -built to keep you dry and sailing in the most extreme conditions.

Got to Azz just after lunch and my friend John was sailing out off the last lot, so we picked him up and headed south to set up a camp

Well powered 5.3 conditions sunday, and better waves than Saturday

The wind oscillated between side and side-on which made down the line wavesailing a little tricky at times, but

..made it around ;)

and no complaints what so ever :)

Warm SW In November on Assateague Island

Ahhh warm Southwest

Marginally powered 5.8 conditions, but the waves where disappointing relative to what I was expecting

Strange, on the outside it seemed that there where some large swell coming thru, and it was a super fun blasting over that with power in the deep water. There were plenty of jumps out there!

Still there where a few nuggets out there

I don't know what happened because they didn't really break with any power the bars

....despite the fact that it was low tide.

There where a few fun hits-so much fun

Every now and then a bigger one would make it thru. Here John lined up a fun one

Lots of hoots and hollering out there :)

just didn't line up all that well today

I Want Some Real Wind

Believe me when I tell you I still lay awake at night thinking about this day. I was on a 4.2 vogue and 76 Thruster in this shot, about to rig down to 3.6.

Sure apples to apples I'll take a day of BIG clean waves over 50 knots, but strong wind is pretty fun too.

Tis the season and I can’t wait for some real wind ;)

Lewes, Marginal 5.3 Conditions

Lewes Delivers!

The Delmarva was hammered by a Nor’easter on Saturday. While inland areas seemed to get anywhere from 3-12 inches snow, I bided my time, allowing the precipitation to move off, and the tide to go out. By 1pm, a check of the radar showed that we where almost in the clear, and we headed north to Lewes. You know your living right when you pull up to the beach during a raging nor'easter, and the rain stops. We timed it just right!

I gotta say Lewes was pretty intense. Gusty conditions. . It was a very impressive storm 12 hours of a NE gale pushed in A LOT of water, and the shore break was INTENSE. The shore pound was so big that even though the wind was onshore, there was a huge wind shadow right at the water’s edge.

Definitely and overhead carry launch is needed, and then you gotta swim your gear out between the sets. It was the only way to get out, and I was still denied a couple times. Can’t ever remember that happening before at this venue.

I love this first picture, look at the swell just 20 feet of the beach. Pretty impressive, can’t say I’ve ever seen it like that here. Remember, this is the Delaware BAY. A little tricky getting off the beach, but oh man the holy grail awaits. Click on this pic to see the full screen view. Yeah, storm sailing ALOT of fun ;)

Once on the outside, the conditions could best be described as psycho chop. Very disorganized, and it was super difficult to approach the ramps with any comfortable speed. So it was a terrible day for aerials. That being said, I love sailing in storm conditions, and it was awesome being out there.. ahhhhhhh J

All the outside psycho chop aside, the inner bar was beautiful. I don’t know why, but every few runs it would clean up for one really nice bottom turn and gybe.

It would clean up and you’d be carving on nothing but white foam, and due to the size, the power in the sail got dumped

you could even do one handed gybes and drag your free hand in the water.

The inner bar was definitely the highlight of the day. So much fun.

The ocean pretty big and was over washing the jetty. The original plan was to sail south side-Indian river inlet, but when we drove past, it was still raining sideways, not very appealing. Stan, we gotta hit this place on the next storm

.....so after ripping my hand open during the first sesh down on Assateague, we redeployed north to Tower Road in Delaware. Lots of of good stoke on the beach as we all appreciated the absolutely fabulous conditions we were scoring: SW 30 gusts to 35+.

The fact that most if not all of us were poaching (playing hooky) and scoring on a Thursday made it that much more special.

I arrived around1pm, threw down a lightening rig of my 4.7, and hit the water.

Really really fun day today. Sailed Slaughter beach in the AM. Lit 5.3. Was in between the big a smaller board so opted for more voulme to accomodate for the big lulls.

Pretty much high tide when i launched, so the water character wasn't ideal, but made the most of it and found a few ramps to play with

Battle on the Bay - Stand Up Paddle Board Competition

Lewes Was Fun Sunday, But Not Many Ramps

The conditions didn't live up to the forecast sunday, moderately powered 5.3 for most, with random pyscho chop, but there were lots of sailors on the water, and that was sooo refreshing

Epic Lewes 4.2-Sept Ushers in Fall NW Winds

I love storm conditions :) Lewes Fired 4.2 Thursday. Arrived at the main beach around 5.30 and sailed till the sunset went down. When I was unrigging, it was blowing sustained mid 40s.

Launched around lo tide and rode the RRD Wave Thruster and and a wave vogue 4.2. I really like the tri fin setup of the thruster in these onshore conditions. Super grip, especially when trying to go front side in STRONG onshore conditions

Hatteras Wave Jam 2011 Canceled

We at the AWT are sorry to announce that this year’s Hatteras Wave Jam has been cancelled. With the massive amounts of damage sustained to the local area, we decided it would be best to call off the contest. Washed out roads and flood damage have made it next to impossible for us to run an event. We are extremely disappointed to announce this decision, but when considering the amount of damage, we feel it is the right thing to do.
The AWT wants to thank everyone for their support, and interest in this event. For all those that have registered and paid their entrance fee to compete, we will contact you about compensation.

Hurricane Irene-Day Two Full Report

Day two in Delaware for Hurricane Irene began for me at Lewes main beach in stormy seas. It was howling!

I was a little concerned about the police and/or national guard telling me I couldn’t sail. I mean, technically we probably weren’t even supposed to be out driving around! So when we first pulled up to Lewes around 10am, I hastily carried my stuff out to the waters edge, and clandestinely rigged on the other side of the dune, a bit of a pain in 40 knots, but a necessary hedge to ensure I could get on the water. ;)

I gotta say for Lewes, it was the first time I was ever blown off the water. I can sail a 4.2 in 50 knots at the baby pool, but not in side off conditions at Lewes. It was blowing WSW, which is very off shore, in the direction of the break wall and the ocean beyond. It was blowing steady 40, gusting to 50. Ramps where vertical and short spaced. Every aerial was a nose dive waiting to happen. Gybing was possible in the beginning, then next to impossible when it got super windy. In the offshore conditions, I wouldn’t have been able to paddle back if something went wrong. On one bail out, way on the outside my stuff flew away from me, in a direction away from the beach, and I found that I could barely swim to catch up to it, I knew it was time to hit the baby pool. That inner voice told me it was time to step away. So I sailed back to the beach and unrigged, while Janis admonished for leaving good wind on the table at lewes

The entire day I was on high alert for floating debris, which is always a risk when sailing in, and after, big storms. Didn’t see much however, though I suspect it will take a few days before flotsam begins to show up?

In hindsight, the sesh Saturday at slaughter was my favorite. Well powered the entire time, and character of the water was much more organized. So nice.

Irene was fun, but I’m glad to see her leave. I don’t think I’d want to go thru anything stronger than a Cat 1. From Saturday 6pm thru about Sunday 4am was the most intense times I’ve ever experienced. Tornados bearing down on my home. Yikes. That said, the sailing was indeed epic. Hope those folks in Hatteras heal up quick, they took quite a pounding

Hurricane Irene Day One

Windsurfing comes with no strings attached.

Day one of the event known as Hurricane Irene was for me bi-polar. Janis and I first arrived at Slaughter around 1pm, to find driving rain and ENE wind at about 35. Just as i finished rigging, thunder and lightening cracked what seemed like right over head, and I could hear Janis screaming over the gale that there was tornadic activity 20 miles south in Lewes. Damn! So close. Well, she pulled the plug on me, and I resigned to conceding day one to dangerous weather. Went home, showered, and had lunch. Lo and behold around 3.30 pm the tornado warnings were dropped, and the sky was clearing....somewhat. Took a bit of coaxing and arm twisting, but I climbed back into my wet shortie, and Janis and I jumped back in the truck for the 7 mile trip to Slaughter. Threw down a lightening re-rig of my 4.2 vogue and 75ltr RRD Wave Cult Quad, and hit the water..

Hood River - The Hatchery

On Sunday the Hatchery was firing, classic gorge conditions I'm told, although the swell was not as big as it normally gets. Still, I was goo-goo eyed at the venue. Hallowed ground (err... water) for sure!
Picture this: you're Sailing the Gorge, THE HATCH, its blowing 3.5, a lot of guys on much smaller gear, I saw many 2.5s!. I'm riding a brand new RRD quad limited edition, there are over a hundred sailors out ripping the place to shreds, busting out big moves..the jagged Gorge walls on either side of the river funneling that wind, and it also carves out an exquisite outline for the sunlight that's backlights the white caps and texture on the water. MAGICAL! I was in heaven, well as close as you can get anyway.

That being said, I have to say I found the conditions at The Wall the day before much more fun. If I could draw an analogy, the hatch on a nuking day is like being on 495 IN gridlock, only all those cars are flying at Mach speed, very close by! Jaaaa just a little bit unnerving, and I couldn't seem to get dialed. Also, the prospect of a high altitude ejection off one of these swells could go bad quick, especially considering your kit is gonna fly downwind a considerable distance. So i kept it close to deck until the crowds thinned out later In afternoon.

The Wall on the other hand was much saner, with only a dozen or so friends there to share it with. Less crowded plus the swell at The Wall was allot smoother, allowing for a better setup and approach for aerials. Ahhhh :). In contrast, on this day, the Hatch was more psycho chop than I care for. To be fair, it was my first time at this venue so I'm sure there is a learning curve to understanding how the spot works. That said, I spent most of this day taking it all in, and realizing how very thankful I am for all of the blessings I have in my life. The Gorge, a very very special place for sure. I'll be back.

Alan and Donald, thanks so much for the call on Friday. Sailing with you guys, and dinner afterwards was one of the highlights of my trip. Good stuff, and hope to see you guys in Hatteras next month for the Jam.

Hood River - The Wall

I've been out here since Monday on a business trip, and beleive it or not, tonight was the first time I got out on the water! Trust me, it hasn't been for lack of wind, this place is a machine....Unreal really. A veritable wind tunnel. The climate is amazing, no humidity, temps mid 80s, just fabulous. Very Maui-esq. in that regard..

Any how, finally got out this evening for a sunset sesh at Rowena, and sailed till sunset.. So cool to be sailing in between these tall mountains, with vertical cliff walls rising up on either side of the river. The wind just rips thru this place..

The Coveted "Secret Spot"

Recently on this blog, and on Facebook, there has been some dialogue as to whether or not we should keep clandestine our favorite, less well known sailing venues, versus complete transparency and freedom of information. A couple of you have come out and expressed yourselves, emailing me directly. Frankly, a vote on the issue would be 50/50, advocating both sides.

Getting to the secret spot takes effort

To be clear, my position is as follows: I believe that to grow our awesome sport, no spot should be kept “secret”. Yes, I often refer to my sessions at the “Secret Spot”, but all my friends here in Delaware and Maryland know the exact location. The spot is hardly a secret anymore. That being said, we continue to give it the moniker of the “Secret Spot” out of reverence to the often epic conditions experienced there. There simply isn’t another name that can be given that extends the deserved machismo that is due the spot. So “Secret” is the name, and that aint changing son. So you guys that are offended (on either side of the argument), take it easy. Its frankly just more fun, and sexier, to refer to the place as “The Secret Spot”, as opposed to say 1400 Pennsylvania Avenue. Come on, it’s a lot more fun to say “meet me at the secret spot”. Plus, we’ve referred to the spot as “the secret spot” for so long now, it would be darn near impossible to call it by any other name. It’s become part of popular culture around these parts. Do you get it? For those of you who resent the lack of clarity, perhaps we should announce latitude and longitude coordinates out akin to freedom of information? And for those that wish to keep their spots secret, well then why not usher in another death cry for our sport, akin to that experienced in the ‘90s? Look dude, can we all just get along?

In addition, it’s not like there are hoards of sailors chomping at the bit, banging on the door, ready to inundate your beach the moment you disclose the location of that coveted spot. I frankly would welcome that scenario (with certain caveats as it pertains to skill level). It’s just WAY more fun to sail with lots of people, no matter the skill level. For me personally, that is a lot of the appeal of The Hatteras Wave Jam, sailing with lots of new people, learning new spots to sail, stepping outside your comfort zone. Most of the venues for the Jam are so obscure that they might otherwise have been thought of as secret, certainly obscure to the uninitiated. To grow the sport, we have to have an open beach policy...Look at what the Jam has done for sailing here on the East Coast! Heck, next September we are going to have a pro-level event in Hatteras, complete with pro-level talent making the trip to sail our waves! Talk about a selfless approach paying dividends. Way to go Bill. We all owe you a debt of gratitude.

At a recent epic session in Lewes, there was quite a bit of consternation about all of the new sailors who showed up out of thin air. But after the day was done and the gear was unrigged, and were all basking in the after-glow of that epic day, I think we all realized what an extraordinary session it was, and I submit almost completely due to the presence of new sailors that showed up that day. New faces, new styles, more energy, more STOKE. Give me more of that…

Windsurfing is making a comeback, so let’s each do our part to spread the stoke, offer encouragement, and welcome newcomers to our beaches, even the clandestine ones. Welcoming new sailors will go a long way toward promoting the sport, and bolstering the resurgence we are seeing in windsurfing, especially here on the Delmarva. That’s what live2sail is all about, spreading the stoke
